The Perfect Mother’s Day Gift

Mother’s Day comes only once a year and while we as moms would love to have Mother’s Day everyday, we have come to appreciate the one day out of the year that is dedicated to us. Mother’s Day is a day to show your love and appreciation to the woman who cared, loved, nurtured, and helped put you on the path to where you are today.

I do understand that not every mother out here has done the job as a mother. So, in my opinion you should take Mother’s Day and show appreciation to the one woman in your life that was a mother figure to you, should it have been a neighbor, a teacher, a aunt or grandmother.

Every year I am asked, “What would you like for Mother’s day?” My response is usually the same, “I don’t know.” We as moms have always sacrificed for our kids so our needs and wants always come last. We get into such a cycle that as we get older, our response stays the same, “I don’t know.”

Now, while I would love a new digital picture frame, a new professional family picture, a lunch or dinner that I am not responsible for paying for, a spa adventure, flowers, trust me, the list can go on and on. But over the years, I have learned that TIME, is the greatest gift that can be given to anyone.

So, while you may go out and buy your mom the gift that she has always wanted, do not forget to spend time with her. You are thinking to yourself, well, I have my own children, I have to work on Mother’s Day, I have this project that I am working on or I really need to get this or that done. It can WAIT or set another day to celebrate with your mom.

Stopping in at mom’s house for a half hour is great but trust me, we as moms would really like quality time with our children. Ask yourself, what does my mom really enjoy? What is my mom’s passion? Now go from there. For example: if your mother loves gardening, go and buy her some new plants and go plant them TOGETHER! If your mom loves garage sales, go running around town to different garage sales in your area and tell her the tab is on you within reason of course. If your mom goes to church and wants you to go, go with her!

If you do not have a lot of money, think back to what your mom did with you as a child. Did she love to cook or bake with you in the kitchen? Did she take you driving in the country or for many walks in the park? Go back and take her in time. Pick up the ingredients to bake cookies or take her to the places that you remember and be sure to talk about the “good ol’ days.”

Spend quality time even if it is only for one day out of the year. Put your personal likes and interests aside and focus on your mom. Create new memories while letting your mom look back to realize that she did a great job and for her to remember the good times.

Materialistic things will come and go, but memories will last a life time and can be passed down forever, when you tell the stories to your children. Always keep in mind, even though your mom may be in great health, it takes a split second and she can be gone, so cherish the time that you have so when you look back, you will have no regrets but hold many memories.

And ALWAYS take pictures!

This article has been written in the loving memory of my mother-in-law who passed away a few years ago but has left an everlasting impact on my life and my family. The last time that we were with her was Mother’s Day and a week later she left us to be with the Lord. The gifts that we bought her were still in the gift bag but she talked all week of the wonderful Mother's Day that she had.
